When I decided to study personal training it was a major career change. I had studied Phys Ed at university but got distracted and I only did the first year.

I got conscripted for compulsory military service for 2 years and then went to work in life insurance, first as a clerk, then as a consultant servicing brokers and then in underwriting.

Here I was able to use what I had studied at varsity and it was as an underwriter that I realised I wanted to teach people how to be healthier and I was growing tired of the corporate world.

I called up a friend from university and who had started a personal training company to find out how it was going and made my decision. I was married with a 2 year old son so it was a big leap of faith.

Firstly during my underwriting days I got the feeling that we may be barking up the wrong tree when it came to healthy lifestyle.

Secondly long before it became a thing I believed that life insurance companies should be rewarding people for lifestyle changes and health improvements.

Therefore I was drawn to clients who needed help becoming active and who had difficulties with movement and mobility.

In conclusion I did research on how they needed to change their individual lifestyles to become healthier and more active.  I soon realised how rewarding it was to see people improve and found my niche in these clients, not in the body building or fitness fraternity.

Why Training

Since primary school I had always taken part in:

  • sport
  • swimming
  • road running
  • cycling
  • triathlons

but had never excelled! Only enjoying taking part, so I tried to convey to my clients the enjoyment of being active, often just taking them for a walk outside, using the environment to train.

I adapted my programming to help them during their normal daily activities and didn’t concentrate too much on their weight.

To me they were already better off becoming more active and felt that by harping on the weight loss they might feel like they had failed and stop training.

My Video’s

Form and function became of utmost importance to me and I have trained the following

  • motor cross riders
  • enduro racers
  • quad bike racers

with excellent results using this approach.

As a result clients with disabilities were regularly referred to me for help and many clients stayed with me for years, becoming good friends.

One of my greatest rewards is seeing clients take the leap to a more active lifestyle from training:

  • once or twice a week to training daily
  • walking
  • running
  • cycling
  • taking part in events like obstacle races

and I take pride in being an example to people, following an active, healthy  lifestyle myself.
